Timeless Craft: The Pour-Over

The year is 2020. Walk into almost any coffee shop from Financial District to Upper East Side or Brooklyn to Montauk that want to be current with the new and hip trends. Guarantee that majority of these places have a barista waiting to serve you a pour over off the menu. Depending on the style of the machine, you may second guess if you took a wrong turn and ended up in someone’s chemistry lab by mistake.  With the culture of today’s society, we are constantly looking for instant gratification or the “Next big thing” to stay up to date or even better ahead of the times!  To the millennials, this style of coffee is hip, new, posh, and trendy! However, what if the truth about when this style of coffee originated really came out? Will it still be such a hype? History says the pour over is a brewing style method that originated dating back to the early 1900s by a German entrepreneur Melitta Bentz. You go girl!  So much for new and trendy! Even though this style dates back to before some of our reader’s grandparents where born, I think it’s safe to say society doesn’t plan on dismissing it anytime soon. And for a good reason! Unlike the traditional “drip brew style” method where a certain volume of water is combined with a certain weight of ground beans and brewed together to extract different aromas. With a pour over you have:

  • More control over the brewing temperature of water
  • More even pour of water over coffee grinds
  • More even extraction of flavors and aromas
  • Better control over the coffee’s strength

For all you coffee lovers out there we challenge you to head to your favorite coffee spot and take time to slow down. Order a pour over, relax and reflect on this new year while tasting history.  Or if some of you are on a budget or like to be more hands on find the link below to experience a timeless craft in the comfort of your own home.
